Mopeds

I have been looking into buying a new moped for a few weeks and I have found they aren't as cheap I would like. I think I will end up paying around $600 for one. I originally anticipated to get one for about $400 but that doesn't seem realistic at this point. Despite the higher price I think that it will still be a wise investment as gas looks ot be increasing this summer and without a moped I would be driving a 1998 suburban that gets about 14 miles to the gallon compared to a moped that gets upwards of 75 miles to the gallon.

Go Johnny! This is a very intelligent investment. I would like to buy a moped too. My car isn't quite as bad as your suburban but not having to fill a gas tank quite as often. We should go on a moped hunt together! =)

Hey just remember, even a low speed collision will get you tons of cash! Sue the piss out of anyone who hits you.

They are fun as hell too.

Hey hey! I need a moped too - I wish I had 600 dollars! The demand for them is going to be ridiculous... and I definitely don't want to be driving my little beast of a car all summer.

That's awesome gas mileage!

I remember when we moved from TX back to WI - we rented a UHaul and it got about 7 miles to the gallon (!). Talk about crazy gas use!

John.

(I know a guy that, like yourself will be attending madison next year. he is looking to sell his 1991 Honda Night hawk for a very reasonable price. You should contact him.)

Yeah, with college approaching, i have also given some thought to selling my motorcycle and getting a moped. I will probably end up making a little off of the deal because i got a really good deal on my bike and kept it in good condition. I think that a moped will be best for madison though because you also need to look at opportunity costs of having each. The moped, although not realiable to get you a long distance or fast, can park pretty much wherever and gets amazing gas mileage. Gas being somehting i don't want to spend money on in college. Overall, i htink the moped will be a better idea for me personally for next year.

(However i still think you should talk to that guy about getting the motorcycle.)

I definately agree that purchasing a moped would be an ideal investment for Madison and many other colleges. But the choice of whether or not to buy one also would be affected by the other modes of transporation offered. For me, assuming that I go to college in Depaul University in Chicago, elevated-train use is included for enrolled students, but I still have to consider the opportunity costs of utilizing this mode of transportation. For instance, while L-train use is free, you cannot take advantage of the mobility and flexibility of riding a moped. Therefore, I may actually have to walk places.

I think mopeds are a real convienence if you use them enough... some people just use them to play around on them and not for actual transportation... this makes for more gas waste... i think if they are used to substitute the suburban instead of in addition to.. then i think its well worth the money.

Morgan brings up a good point. Sometimes i'll catch myself asking a friend to go "mopeding," which usually comes down to driving around the city four or five times and stopping at frostie freeze. Not quite sure this is what my dad had in mind when he bought it. But anyway, they are definitely well worth it especially once college rolls around. At the same time though, they are a higher risk for being injured, but, i guess if you stick with tony's philosophy, you cant go wrong.
